The Many Names of Sugar

I recently gave a talk about sugar. We discussed reading labels and that’s when I realized I think label reading could be a full course in and of itself! Decoding labels is not easy and one of the reasons why people have trouble understanding the meaning of them is because they are not in clear, everyday language. Often, we are having to do some sort of math, to even understand the nutrition values because of the variance in serving sizes.

One of the more common questions I get asked is “Is sugar always listed as sugar on a label?” The answer is No. There are over 60 names for sugar, some of which you may not even think would be sugar by looking at the ingredient name.

I decided to add an extra blog post today to provide a quick list of the common names that sugar goes by. I am sure that we will end up having more names for sugar as time goes by. Please note that this is by no means a definitive list.

However, it is a list of the names for sugar that I come across most often and have seen on product labels most frequently.
