Black Friday – Will You #OptOutside?

When I was growing up, Black Friday was a great shopping day! The stores had transformed overnight and the rush of people waiting to get the seasons best deals would line up and camp out starting at 3am. It seemed like a magical time and fabulous way to kick off to a wonderful season. We would get a hot chocolate later that morning and all of the fellow shoppers seemed nice and respectful of one another.

As time has gone one, we have seen so many changes! People are camping out on Thanksgiving day or morning, missing time with their families. We see fist fights breaking out in stores as people are diving to get the last hot item on the shelf at a discounted price, stores are opening earlier on Thanksgiving evening making Black Friday, Black Thursday, the holiday decorations in stores now start in October or September, make the “special” feeling of the holiday disappear completely. How do you get excited about something you’ve seen over and over for the last three months?

This year, we are seeing a new Black Friday emerge!

Stores are still doing their thing, but one store in particular is diverting from the status quo. REI has chosen to close its doors on Friday, allowing its employees to enjoy a day off while promoting to the rest of us to #OptOutside!

This is an amazing quest not only to get back to life, but to get outside and ENJOY it! Enjoy life! Go and live it over a To-Do list! I found this to be refreshing and health promoting too! Whether you choose to hike, bike, kayak, go for a walk, taking the day we traditionally get off from work to enjoy the outdoors and take time for YOU is an absolutely wonderful idea!

The holidays are a stressful time for many of us and we have limited time with our loved ones in our everyday life. Why not spend it with your family hiking, moving your bodies and creating memories?
